I'm not sure about cat bites, but the Motor City Madman has me convinced that cat scratches are quite another matter.

Actually, I don't want to belittle the possibility that the injury was serious, either because the bite caused a puncture wound, for example, affecting a nerve, or because of some unexpected complication or difficulty during recovery. Strange things happen.

Perhaps, I am biased by my prior cat ownership. I had a cat when I was a teenager and I had gotten bites on my hands, legs, and neck. None of those would rate above a scratch - I've gotten worse playing soccer:)

In any event, it seems like the plaintiff had it coming - one should not just pick up someone else's cat. There is a techinique involved in getting the animal know / smell you before trying to get "friendly."
